Jinn, are mysterious and supernatural creatures, which are believed to have been formed from smokeless fire in accordance with the Islamic religion. They are believed to have the ability to eat, drink, marry, and have children.

Because they are believed to have the ability to assume both human and animal form, they are also said to have the free will to choose between good and evil. They are also found in inanimate objects such as stones, trees, rocks, water and maybe fire.
According to oral history, the belief in Jinn first became popular in the Arabia, where they were believed to inspire poets, musicians and soothsayers. Therefore, some Jinn are believed to be good and help people out of their problems, while others are believed to be bad and cause destruction. 2 3
In Nigeria, Jinn are mostly known to the northern Muslim population. Muslim Nigerians believe that Jinn is a powerful and mysterious being which influence people to act strangely when they are possessed.
They also believe that people who step in their (Jinn’s) dwelling places are usually punished severely; that is why they often live in deserted areas such as refuse dumps and in some uncompleted buildings.

In conclusion, the purpose of this article is to educate the general public and not to cause disunity among people of different religions. While our beliefs may not tally because of the heterogenous nature of the country, we are advised to respect each other’s beliefs and cultures for the sake of peace. 4 5
